Wall-diaphragm interactions in seismic response of single-story building systems

The objective of this paper is to investigate the seismic time history response single-story buildings with a wide range wall and roof diaphragm periods ductility. Current design specifications, e.g., ASCE 7-16, are transitioning from accounting for inelasticity in only vertical lateral force resisting systems, i.e., walls, including horizontal system, diaphragm. It not clear if can be considered independently, nor they utilize their own modification coefficients. More fundamentally, basic manner which stiffness, mass, ductility interact fully understood. Here, building approximated reduced order mass-spring model parameters varied so that periods, explored. imposed vibration analyses, elastic inelastic analyses. results show regimes where diaphragms interact, those largely independent. When occurs demands significant component, or diaphragm, initiates yielding, greater than traditionally expected. compared current proposed provisions predicting conclusions drawn respect accuracy available methods.
